We are writing in response to you who have asked about the coming Journey of the Grandmothers to New Zealand. We will be visiting a variety of places and staying in many types of lodging, from retreat sites, to cabins, to nice New Zealand hotels. We are also honored to visit Great Grandmother Rose Pere and the Marae of the Tukorehe tribe. At the Marae we will sleep Marae style (mattresses all together on the floor) one night. It is a great honor that we are invited onto this Marae, the most sacred place for a tribe.
Here is our itinerary: (Flights are not included in the Journey price. We recommend Air New Zealand RT to Auckland, you can get an inexpensive one-way flight from Wellington to Aukland to catch your flight home. Or you can request a return flight from Wellington instead of Aukland. (Flight from Wellington to Aukland not included in journey price). If you purchase your tickets earlier, they will be cheaper, of course.
Your departure from home should be no later than February 18, and your departure from Auckland should be on March 3rd or 4th (but the journey officially ends on the 3rd so hotel the night of the 3rd is at your own expense).
February 18 Fly to Auckland
February 20 Between 6-8am, Arrive
February 20, 21 Sharda Retreat Center
We’ll spend 2 days at Sharda, visiting beautiful and sacred sites and getting to know the area.
February 22, 23 Rotorura
We will visit the Queen Elizabeth Spa, stay in a motel where each room has it’s own natural spring fed hot tub, and visit the museums and sites in this area.
February 24,25,26 Grandmother Rose Pere and Lake Waikaremoana.
Rose is a revered person to the Maori people. She was chosen by the Maori people in the way that the Dalai Lama is chosen by the Tibetans. We are fortunate to spend some time with her. We will also visit the huge inland lake/sea Lake Wikaremoana which is deeply sacred to the Maori, and the sites in the area.
February 27, 28 Napier
We’ll take a couple of days to relax. You can visit the town of Napier, walk across to the ocean, take in the tourist sites. This is our time to relax.
March 1 Tukorehe Marae
This marae is on the Kapiti coast. We are invited to share in a dinner and an evening with the Tukorehe. These people are very involved in environmental issues. We also have the opportunity to share in some of their sacred teachings. To stay in a Marae is an honor many many people in New Zealand will never know, as the marae is the sacred place of the tribe.
March 2,3 (last day) Wellington
Our Journey ends in Wellington. We’ll stay in the city in a lovely hotel. You can fly out on the 3rd with the rest of us, or you can stay on and visit. This is the end of our Journey together.
